River of Champions is a true against-all-odds story about common teen-aged boys whose single goal, and the path to reach it, turned them into extraordinary young men. The story traces their passion, desire, trials, betrayal, failure and triumphs. The story is played out against the stark background of frigid winters in the years when the brilliant Aurora Borealis lit the night sky of a struggling, impoverished far-north Minnesota town; a time when Elvis was front and center.

In a story of twists and surprises the boys transform the otherwise sleepy little town into hold-your-breath excitement and pride. The story is a treatise of never-giving-up, of what humanity can accomplish when it believes in itself and others. It is a story of coming of age. It is a true and inspiring American sports story.

River of Champions eBook Mary Halverson Schofield

I loved the personal touch that the author brought to this story. I felt like I was living the life of each and every young man in the book who sought to reach success in the worl of youth hockey. I really did care whether or not they won this state championship for the state of Minnesota. It is really heart wrenching and I am happy to report that these little championship came through in the end.

Sorry if I gave part of the eventual outcome away in my review.

However, there is a lot more to these bunch of youngster who turn out to be Champions.

Read the book and you will really enjoy it.

River of Champions eBook Mary Halverson Schofield Reviews

RIVER OF CHAMPIONS is simply a masterpiece! An epic work by author Mary Halverson Schofield that showcases the complete landscape of life in a small town at the midway point in the 1950s. The reader is transported back to a time when television was the new frontier and rock and roll was in its infancy. However, all seemed quite distant in Thief River Falls, where champions unbeknownst to themselves were about to be borne. Ms. Schofield describes quite vividly an event that for one brief moment in time put Thief River on the map. The event was the 1956 State Hockey Tournament where a handful of teenage kids, considered outcasts and rogues by many, went on to victory against unimaginable odds. The team was plagued with everything imaginable --- not enough players, not enough discipline, too many cigarettes and way too many injuries. But the author brings to the forefront the camaraderie amongst the team as we are introduced to 16-year old Jackie Poole who just can't get a break. Overshadowed by his brother, a local hero to the townspeople, Jackie strives to find his own unique voice. Through the emblematic cry "Win State," conscripted by this group of young outcasts, Jackie and the team take matters into their own hands. They practice before sunrise on a crystal ice sheet and late at night in a makeshift rink. It is this shear self-determination that leads to the first step to victory, and that crucial first step to adulthood.

After reading this wonderful novel it is quite evident that Mary Halverson Schofield is a master craftsman in the art of writing. She has taken a moment in her life and allowed us the readers to share with her the pain, the glory, the ideals of family and the awakening of the human spirit. RIVER OF CHAMPIONS is a must read for all!
I understand this book is serious considered to be made into a movie. I can truly understand why. I hope it happens.
