An Ivy League graduate who grew up on Park Avenue takes his first job at the most sensational tabloid newspaper in New York City - and soon finds himself writing promotional stories about a cash giveaway contest intended to keep the paper alive! Jack Stone is not your everyday reporter, and his real education doesn’t begin in earnest until he hooks up with streetwise photographer Vinnie Corcora to do stories about the contest winners - a cast of characters who bring new meaning to "your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” It’s a wild ride that defies expectations and stereotypes, and along the way Jack earns a Ph.D in the human condition - while learning the true meaning of love, loyalty and friendship.

I read Shepherd Avenue by Charlie Carillo and loved it. So, I was eager to read God Plays Favorites. I wasn't disappointed. I found the bromance between Dart and Vinnie very sweet and compelling. Vinnie is a tough from the streets while Dart earned his nickname from his Alma Mater, Dartmouth. Yet they relate at a level seemingly deeper than most men do. I acknowledge that the F-bomb goes off every few seconds in this book, so if you are offended by that, you will have to miss a really great read. For me, the rough language seemed natural in the locker room-like setting of the old school news room. I wouldn't let a little bad word separate me from Mr. Carillo's wonderful storytelling and from his colorful and endearing characters. I was very moved by both of the Carillo books I've read so far. I'll read more, for sure.

A book I couldn't put down life ve never known thank God. The book was great Wish it could have been less sad, but life is rarely sunshine during roses
God Plays Favorites, by Charlie Carillo, was one of my favorite books to read this year. Carillo, who once worked for a popular New York newspaper, wrote this story about a young Ivy League college graduate, Jack "Dart" Stone who lands a job for a New York newpaper assigned to a newspaper "Kingo" contest. He befriends Vinnie Corcora, the newsroom's photographer who teaches him not only about how to get the story to sell newspapers, but also about what life is like outside his very Wasp, privileged upbringing. I love the way Carillo writes because he brings you into the story and you can't put the book down until it is done. Thanks Charlie Carillo for your entertaining characters whom I believe could have been acquaintances from your life as a journalist. Very funny story and I loved it!
This is the story of a young man's friendship with an older colleague. I couldn't put this book down. It had it all first loves, challenging parental relationships, laughter, grief and me st of all, love that transcends socioeconomic lines. I highly recommend this book.
Like other readers I would never have found Carillo if it wasn't for and s. After first reading Shepherd Avenue, I bought others by this author. I must say my favourite to date is My Ride with Gus, but I did enjoy this novel. Carillo gives you good rounded characters, you feel that you actually know them. Many are not perfect but they are very human. Obviously he is a writer that likes people, what we term a 'people person'. Always his books are a good read, and I am a great fan and have recommended him to friends.
5 stars plus 105 stars. This is a story of what the real world is all about. The newspaper industry makes strange bedfellows. There's Al sometimes very funny, Jack the Ivy League reporter and Vinnie the guy who got a degree in the School of Hard Knocks and is a newspaper photographer. Jack and Vinnie a real odd couple work together and become friends, the kind we all think we have but rarely do. Vinnie lives on Mott St. and has for a long time and he went to school with Lucky Sal, a rather likeable shifty guy. I don't do spoilers so I'll just say This is a tough, heart warming, fast moving story. I lost a lot of sleep because I read it in one day, could not put it down.
Anyone can appreciate this story but if you have ever lived on the East side downtown New York and you remember the pillow women etc.
you will not only read this book but you will read it twice. Charlie Carillo you really made my day. Please continue to write and I will continue to read your books.
Surprising how much I liked this book. The premise is basically simple. Ivy League grad gets job at rag newspaper. Paired up with an older experienced photographer they go on different stories. But it's so much more than that. A lot happens to the main character, and most of it concerns the photographer in one way or another. By the time you reach the end, you've got stuff to think about, if you're paying attention. The book starts with a funeral, then goes into flashbacks. By the time the story got around to the funeral again, I seriously wanted to sit down and cry. Very good book.
Two decades - this is the span of time from the start of the story to the present time when Jack returns to Mott Street in Little Italy (NYC) for Vinnie's funeral. Jack and Vinnie only knew each other during the first of these twenty years. Around 95% of the story happened during that first year, most of the remaining 5% were flashbacks, then there was just a tiny bit that happened in the last 19 years.

Notwithstanding, the story of the friendship that developed, and the lives affected by that friendship/partnership in that one year carried the entire plot and made for one beautiful novel. The friendship between Jack and Vinnie surpassed age, race, social status, connections; proof that friendship knows no bounds. Add to that, the novel was enriched by sub-plots of the various people that Jack and Vinnie encountered in their work as newspaper journalist/photographer.

One thing I love about Charlie Carillo's books is that he is able to weave his stories from one event - be it ordinary or special - and that single event becomes the hub from which different spokes are connected to form the rim that wraps up the whole story.
I read Shepherd Avenue by Charlie Carillo and loved it. So, I was eager to read God Plays Favorites. I wasn't disappointed. I found the bromance between Dart and Vinnie very sweet and compelling.
