On a cold Christmas night, Danielle’s insensitivity and her selfish attitude lead her Grandmother to tell her about The Workhouse. The tale transports us to Victorian/ Edwardian-era London, when industrialization prevailed and children had to work hard and help their parents. This story, based on actual events, teaches us how the power that comes from optimism, tenacity and compassion can change our luck The workhouse was a government institution that from the end of the fourteenth until the beginning of the 20th century provided shelter to millions of low-income people in the United Kingdom. While in 1930 workhouses officially closed their doors in most localities, some of them remained operative under different names until the late twentieth century. Today one in ten people of English heritage have some connection with this institution where more than five million people died because of mistreatment. The famous actor Charlie Chaplin, his mother and brother were among the millions of British people who suffered the horrors of “shelter” under the roof of this cold and cruel institution.

On occasions you want to read a good book and cry out all your feelings, but a book that begins sad and ends in a happy place, is a work of art. So if you’re struggling to find a book that fits this description “The Workhouse” by Pilar Sinquemani, is that book.

“The Workhouse” is a historical fiction based on real institutions located in Britain during the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries where the homeless and less fortunate were offered shelter in conditions so harsh that inmates struggled daily for scraps of food to survive. This is a story of one unfortunate family that lived in these institutions, and through their trials and tribulations the Author takes you on a roller coaster ride of emotions that leaves you searching your own feelings on life today as we see it. A great book for all ages that gently touches the heart and soul of the reader like never before. Uncommon in my opinion to see such a strong connection of life and reality written in books today, especially in young Authors.

What makes this book great, is contrast and timing. Like the sun shining after the rain, you can appreciate a happy chapter in a book when you and the characters have already experienced some tough times as well. To finish a book feeling content, the final chapter shouldn’t have a downer ending. It should compare to a rollercoaster, with it’s ups and downs, but you don't end the ride in a downwards rut. On the contrary, you return safely back to the platform area, knowing that no matter what has happened, everything is going to be fine. Not a spoiler, I promise.

I bought the spanish edition which I really enjoyed. A friend gave me the english edition as a gift. I read it out of curiosity as many versions in other languages are not as good as the original. I was very pleased to note that the author is fully bilingual and the book is not a translation but an original. It is a heartwarming story, dramatic and lovely at the same time. It describes the life in the British workhouses and the endurance of the human soul. I recommend this book. Elba Santiago
