An unidentified homeless man is killed by a hit and run driver in the seedy part of town. A chance encounter with a witness who says he discovered the body, results in a radio sound bite that initially brings kudos from radio station management for novice reporter Timothy Townsend.

Fame is short-lived as local authorities learn the decedent is an undercover state drug enforcement officer and when Townsend's source can't be located, he becomes the focus of a police homicide investigation.

Townsend desperately searches for the elusive witness and retraces his steps to China Imports, the shop the man indicated he operated, but no such person is there. Townsend learns that a police detective was in the area at the time of the hit and run but that information never made it into the police report.

The sister of an ex-con with alleged connections to China Imports, becomes an ally and love interest for Townsend. A police inquiry into her brother's activities cause the authorities to suspect MaryK of being a part of a drug ring and Townsend is forced to confront her -- just as a rogue detective shows up at her home resulting in an altercation between the cop and Townsend.

China Imports was full of twists and turns; this much I'll grant you. However, its chief villain was pretty obvious and was apparently Teflon-coated to have managed to avoid arrest so many times when his involvement was obvious to all players.
My other beef with this book was style. It was amateurish. The dialogue and the action scenes managed to hold their own, but descriptions of feelings, of thoughts, were disastrous. Example: "Tim was embarrassed. He wished he hadn't asked the question." What's wrong with that? Only that 1) his discussion partner hadn't said anything that should embarrassed him and 2) he hadn't asked a question. Illogical inserts like this kept pulling me out of the action.
I hesitated between two and three stars and finally gave it three because the complex plot does hang together. Still, a skilled editor would have been a great help.

China Imports edition by Gene Camfield Romance eBooks Reviews

It kept me on the edge of my seat, I didn't want to put it down. A quick read full of excitement.
This was an exciting book with many twists and turns. I pride myself at predicting the way a book ends and over the years have become bored with so many novels with predictable endings. This book surprised me every time I thought I had it all figured out. Camfield's detailed and descriptive writing technique provides readers with a sense of tangibility that not all other novel's possess. I enjoyed it very much and look forward to reading his next work.
